"I'll send you this dawn. I know it's a ridiculous sentence, but you'll see what I mean."
"I'll send you today's dawn this afternoon. An absurd sentence I know, but you know what I mean."
British painter David Hockney wrote a message to his friend by drawing the twilight of the dawn seen from the Yorkshire coast on his iPhone.
It's great to be able to present someone with the dawn I saw and felt as an image of the place where I'm staying.
I'm interested in this interesting way of painting the impression of the space in reality that surrounds us.
We have explored the so-called "process of space becoming a place," which recognizes the objective and more abstract concept of "space" as an organic being that lives and grows together, and remembers it as a "place" given individual subjectivity and specificity by projecting experiences into the space.
A quiet small town in Spain where the sun was transparent even in the middle of winter
The orange roof and light green trees that I saw up the castle in clothes bought locally in Prague, Czech Republic
A cactus park in France welcomed by the cool breeze and the widespread yoonsul and street cats below the horizon
Singapore's building forest shines like blue glass over a noisy boat in a strange language and is reflected in the river
These images of cities or villages encountered by chance talk to familiar and unfamiliar scenes.
In order to keep their stories long, I synesthetically connect and reconstruct the photos, drawings, videos, memos, and sounds collected during the lingering period to fill and expand the screen anew.
In this way, the spatialized memory field is made of various sizes and shapes of architectural structures that overlap bright colors that contain the moment the space is converted into a place, and green natural objects that harmonize with them.
In addition, it forms a narrative place that does not exist as if it exists by cutting and attaching lenticular, photographs, and magazine pieces that match each part, or adding detailed expressions with materials such as thin brushes and oil pastels.
Components such as the weather of the day, the light noise and singing, the sound and facial expressions of someone next to you, and the smell that grazed your nose.
In the end, I've been working to write down the big and small stories of the place for a long time and move them onto the canvas.
