About
My work consists of consonants and vowels in Hangul. An irregularly stacked collection of consonants and vowels can be a day or a moment for me. Or it could be a bunch of memories that go beyond time and space. This feels like a mole to me and sometimes comes across as a specific emotion. Fragments of randomly accumulated consonants and vowels summon individual memories and often emerge as something special in connection with words, writings, pictures, photos, videos, music, relationship situations, etc.

These formative attempts have been repeated for years and are being explored through various images. In the beginning, we tried reproductive attempts to reflect certain images or moments as they are, abstract expressions were also made to emphasize sensory behavior, and minimal work using simple colors. Then, in recent years, there has been a habit of unconsciously tracking past memories, and the tendency to connect the current memory layer through SNS (eye) has begun to be revealed. After repeating this process, images began to be drawn naturally at some point, and it began to appear in the form of a tomb of consonants and vowels.

French philosopher Bergson (1859-1941) mentioned habitual memory and image memory, which is a physical memory and a functional memory that adapts to the external world such as repetition and presentness (now techniques, habits, and movements). On the other hand, image memory is a representative memory called personal event, timeliness, accident, or pure memory. Importantly, these two memories interact with each other and become a factor of realistic perception.

I deeply sympathized with Bergson's concept of memory, and eventually came to think that memory is probably all of life in human life. I think the act of drawing pictures on me is also a visual product created by unconscious memories. According to Bergson's logic, painting is a mixture of physical and rational memories, and it is a visualization of images created by rational memories by expressing them with physical memory gestures.

I tried to express the images of my inner memory as deposited images stacked on the stratum. A strong memory often keeps the image clear. When I think of these intense visual images, I work as an extension of the act of tying them to the screen. In particular, the character series, which depicts famous celebrities, is like a record of personal idols with characters that influenced my life, and through this, I wanted to express the emotions and zeitgeist that represent the era. This is because we always have a common universal consensus, although each person has different specific memories and thoughts about an event or character. This idolization work is personally very meaningful to me and is like a reminder of memory. It can be said that it is a work that focuses on personal emotions and narratives rather than aesthetic purity.

There is a relief (half-dimensional) work as a different expression method that is being attempted recently. Initially, the consonants and vowels of Hangeul were cast in various sizes and colors using paraffin, and then arranged irregularly on a metal plate, and the lower part of the metal plate was heated with a torch or a hot plate to emphasize the accidental effect of melting characters by heat. The results at that time were suitable for expressing the meaning of faint memories, maximizing the accidental effect as if memories were melting. However, after the completion of the work, due to the cracks in the paraffin over time, the current work has become more of a sculpture. Through these series of sculptural forms, I am dealing with stories that I feel and remember in recent years rather than very distant memories or emotions. Stories like memories that are still touchable. The image contains abstract but more intimate and realistic emotions. In other words, rather than feeling like creating or drawing images rationally, they are working like playing time travel as if they are reminiscent. Through this visual exploration, I realize that memory itself contains vitality, and I want to revive the memory of life through work.
