About
Walking and drawing are the two central axes that are the basis of my work. When working on the streets of the city, on-site drawing is the starting point of all works. On-site drawing is a record of existence as an artist, and an hour or so of drawing is also a time of everyday life. Through on-site drawing, the urban space of everyday life is briefly appropriated as a space of deviation, and it is converted into a new space through this work. This drawing is completed as a work itself or as a motif for large work.
When you walk through an urban space and observe the various plants in it, there is a moment when you are immersed in the object. As they are captured by the field of view, the image expands and approaches my field of view like the zoom-in function of a camera. If you create an image through observation in the field, you can look into a specific part of your interest in more detail, so you will be immersed in the object at that moment. The expression of the large leaf expressed on a large screen can be said to be an expression that maximizes such an immersion situation. I feel anxious curiosity and overwhelming at the same time in the act of improvising on a large screen that is not contained in my view, similar to the experience of being immersed in plants on the side of the road for a while.
Plants I encounter in my daily life in the city, such as Jeju peppermint trees, zelkova trees in Han River Park, iron trees that make up the walls of apartments, and weeds that grow in every corner of the city, are materials that I am interested in. Based on these materials, I am experimenting with the boundaries of conception and abstraction, drawing and painting.
